Acer saccharinum
Acer saccharinum, the Sugar Maple of the United States. It makes a large tree 70 to 80 feet high, with somewhat loose branches.
The leaves are palmately five lobed, glaucous beneath, and on long slender petioles; in autumn they turn orange scarlet in colour.
There are several varieties, but they are no improvement on the type.
The majority of the Acers thrive on chalk.
