Actinidia

A genus of Ternstroemiacae composed of a few species of deciduous climbing shrubs, found chiefly in China and Japan. As a whole it is not a very important genus from a decorative standpoint, though a very interesting and ornamental species, A. Chinensis is of strong climbing habit with large orbicular leaves, which, when first produced, are densely covered with red hairs.

The flowers are said to be yellow, 1.5 inches in diameter, and followed by edible fruits as large as Walnuts, and tasting like Gooseberries. Although only recently introduced to cultivation it has been known from dried specimens for many years. Other species are arguta, Kolomikta, and volubilis.
