Amelanchier Canadensis

Amelanchier Canadensis, the June or Service Berry from North America, is the best species. It was introduced in 1746, and large specimens are to be found in many places.

It makes a tree 15 to 30 feet high with a large bushy head and small oval leaves which colour brilliantly in autumn. The flowers are snow white and borne in short racemes in April.

A variety called oblongifolia forms a bush 3 to 6 feet high, and flowers profusely; it is an excellent plant for a specimen bed or for forcing, and can be increased by division or by layering.
