Arbutus

A genus of Ericaceae composed of small evergreen trees and large shrubs of ornamental character, requiring similar treatment to Rhododendrons. For groves or specimen plants they are excellent subjects.

Arbutus Andrachne grows 20 feet high, and bears oblong leaves and panicles of greenish white flowers in spring, which are succeeded by small orange or red fruits. It is found in the Levant. When young it is a little tender.

Arbutus hybrida is a hybrid between the foregoing and Arbitus Unedo, and is intermediate between them.

Compacta, micropbylla, qliercifolia, and rubra are varieties.
