Arbutus unedo

Arbitus Unedo, the Strawberry Tree, is indigenous to southern Europe, and is found wild about Killarney, where it assumes the proportions of a small tree. It is, however, usually met with as a large bush 12 to 15 feet high and 10 feet or more through. The leaves are oblong, lanceolate, and serrated.

The flowers are in short, drooping panicles, and are white, or white flushed with rose, in colour. They are borne from September onwards for two months.

The fruits are the size of ordinary marbles, and covered with short, fleshy, spiny growths. When ripe, which is from ten to twelve months after flowering, they are orange scarlet in colour.
