Three species of this genus of Aristolochiaceae are hardy. They are strong growing climbers of handsome appearance, useful for walls or pergolas, and grow well in light loam. A. Sipho, the Siphon-like Birthwort or Dutchman's Pipe, from the United States in 1763, has large, cordate leaves and small yellowish flowers. A. tomentosa (North America, 1799) has also large cordate leaves, which differ from the former in being tomentose on the under surface. A. Califoinica is the other species.
