Asimina triloba

The Asimina triloba, the Papaw of the southern United States, was introduced in 1763. It forms a bush or sometimes a small tree bearing oblong deciduous leaves 5 inches or so long, which turn bright yellow previous to falling.

The flowers, which are rarely borne here, are dark purple and yellow. It requires similar treatment to Magnolia, and belongs to the order Anonaceae.
