Astragalus Tragacantha

The Great Goat's Thorn. This Leguminous shrub is a native of Asia Minor, and was introduced in 1640. It forms a dense, cushion-like mass 1 foot high, with short, stunted branches clothed with small, pinnate leaves, the petioles of which are of a stiff, spiny nature.

The flowers are borne in June and are lilac in colour. It is a good rockery plant, and is increased by means of cuttings planted in a cold frame in July or August.
