A genus of curious, reddish brown flowered shrubs belonging to Calycanthaceae.

They are of no special value, and are not very ornamental; the blossoms are, however, very fragrant.

Calycanthus Floridus (Florida), the Carolina Allspice, is from the southern United States and is very rare in cultivation, the one found under that name usually being Calycanthus glaucus or Calycanthus Occidentalis.

Calycanthus glaucus, from the southern United States, grows 3 feet high, and is distinguished by the glaucous under surface of the leaves.

Calycanthus Occidentalis, from California, grows 8 or 9 feet high, and makes a large bush. All are deciduous and like a fairly rich soil.
