This belongs to the order Ternstroemiacae. C. Japonica, the common Camellia, might be planted outdoors more often than at present, especially in the warmer counties, for it is a first rate evergreen, and usually flowers well.

It is advisable to plant so that it is shaded from the east, for in the event of a frosty night occurring when in flower, it is better to keep the sun from the blossoms until they have thawed. The majority of the varieties will grow out of doors if a good soil with some peat is provided.

If one variety more than another is to be recommended it is Donckelaarii ; this has large, semi-double, deep red flowers.
