Carpinus


A valuable genus of the Coryleae tribe of Cupuliferae, composed of ornamental trees which have very hard wood and large heads of twiggy branches. They are found in Europe, Asia, and North America, and are well represented by the Hornbeam, a British tree.

Other species are Carpinus Caroliniana, the American Hornbeam; Carpinus cordata, Carpinus Betulus, Carpinus Japonica, and Carpinus laxiflora, from Japan; and Carpinus Orientalis, Orient.
