Catalpa

A very showy genus of Bignoniaceae, composed of good sized large headed trees suitable for planting on lawns. The leaves are large and cordate, and the flowers are borne in large terminal panicles in August. When young, the wood is very soft and pithy, but as the trees age it becomes hard and durable, the timber being excellent for use in wet places.

Young trees must be protected from rough winds, as the branches are easily broken. Seeds form the best means of propagation, though cuttings can be rooted.

The leaves are large. It is an exceptionally good town tree and is worth a place in the garden.

Species are Catalpa bignonioides, Bungei, China; cordifolia, western Kentucky and Tennessee; and Kaempferi, Japan.
