Cercis

A showy and interesting genus of the Leguminosae composed of small trees or large shrubs, which have usually cordate or renif orm leaves. The flowers are Pea shaped, and are produced in May or June from both one year old and older wood.

Five species are in cultivation, but one only is at all common. This, Cercis Siliquastrum, is worth a place as a lawn specimen.

Species are Cercis canadensis, Cercis siliquastrum, Cercis Chinensis, China and Japan; Cercis Occidentalis, California; and Cercis reniformis, Texas. All these are tender when young.
