Chimonanthus fragrans

The Winter Flower of China and Japan belongs to Calycanthaceae. It is a deciduous bush, 6 or 8 feet high, with lanceolate leaves 5 or 6 inches long.

Its chief attraction is the time of flowering, as the blossoms, which are cream or yellow in colour and very fragrant, are borne in January and February. About London it flowers well in the open, though in many places it is planted against a wall. The variety grandiflora has larger and richer coloured flowers. It is increased by layering.
