Clethra alnifolia

Fragrant, white flowered, deciduous shrubs belonging to Ericaceae, which require similar treatment to Rhododendrons. Clethra acuminata is a North American species known as the White Alder.

The flowers are very fragrant, and borne in racemes in August. It grows upwards of 12 feet high when mature. Clethra alnifolia is the Sweet Pepper Bush of Florida.

It grows 3 or 4 feet high, and flowers in September. The varieties paniculata and tomentosa are to be commended. Clethra canescens is from China and Japan.
