Hamamelis virginiana

A genus of Hamamelidaceae, composed of a few species of autumn or winter flowering deciduous shrubs or small trees which thrive in light, loam and peat. Hamamelis Virginica, the North American Witch Hazel, bears curious, yellow flowers, with twisted petals, in autumn. In beauty this is far surpassed by Hamamelis arborea, the Mansak of Japan. This forms a small tree and blossoms in January, every twig being covered with golden blooms with narrow, twisted petals. Hamamelis Japonica has also yellow flowers, while its variety, Zuccariniana, has lemon coloured blossoms. Hamamelis mollis has large, hairy leaves and fine blossoms, which have curious, hooked petals. It blooms early in January.
