Helianthemum (Rock Rose)

A very ornamental genus of Cistaceae, composed of a number of evergreen species of low shrubs which are very floriferous. They thrive best on a sunny bank in light loam. Cuttings of young shoots root quickly indoors, if not given much water. The best known is Helianthemum vulgare, the Rock Rose. It grows from 1 inch to 6 inches high, and bears yellow flowers from May to July.

There are several varieties, of which the best are crocatum, croceum, c. flore pleno, mutabile, rhodanthum, roseum, stramineum, venustum, Fireball, and Magenta Queen. Other species are Helianthemum alyssoides, Helianthemum formosum, Helianthemum halinnifolium, Helianthemum ocymoides, Helianthemum polifolium, and Helianthemum umbellatum.
