Hippophae rhamnoides

The Sea Buckthorn of Europe and temperate Asia forms a large deciduous shrub or small tree, and is grown for the sake of its fine orange coloured fruits, which last in good condition for several months during autumn and early winter. The leaves are grey in colour and Willow-like, the blossoms inconspicuous. When planting it is essential to place one male plant among half a dozen or so females, to ensure fertilisation. Hippophae salicifolia may also be grown.
