Hypericum


A genus of Hypericaceae made up of a large number of evergreen or deciduous shrubs, which are yellow flowered and usually bloom during summer and autumn. They are found in Europe, Asia, and North America, and generally are of easy growth. Loamy soil is suitable, and cuttings form a ready means of increase. For ordinary purposes a few species only are required.

Hypericum Androsaemum, the Tutsan, Europe, grows 2 to 3 feet high and bears flowers 1 inch across, which are followed by black fruits.

Hypericum calycinum is a dwarf, spreading Oriental species with large showy flowers. It is suitable for carpeting large tracts of land.

Hypericum Hookerianum is a strong growing Himalayan plant, is very free flowering.

Hypericum Moserianum, a handsome hybrid between calycinuni and patulum, and intermediate in habit between the two. It forms a good subject for a bed.

Hypericum patulum is an ornamental plant from India and China, growing from 1 foot to 2 feet high. The variety Henryi grows 3 feet high, is hardier, and flowers more freely.
