This genus of Solanaceae is often found represented in cottage gardens by Lycium Chinense, a Chinese species, popularly called the Box Thorn or Tea Tree. It forms long, slender branches, which in the open assume the shape of a large tangled bush.

Placed against a wall it quickly covers a large space. The flowers are small and purplish, the chief interest being in the scarlet fruits, which ripen in autumn.

The most interesting species of the group is Lycium pallidum, from New Mexico and Arizona. It is of stiff, upright growth, and bears peculiar greenish blossoms.
