Magnolia grandiflora

Magnolia grandiflora, the Bull Bay of the south United States, introduced in 1737, is well known by reason of its large, evergreen, leathery leaves and handsome, fragrant, white flowers, the latter being borne throughout the summer, and being often 9 inches across. In many places it has to be grown against a wall, but in the southern counties it grows and flowers well in the open. At Mount Edgcumbe a very fine example is to be seen.
