Osmanthus

Evergreen, Holly-like shrubs compose this genus of Oleaceae. One species only is hardy. This, Osnianthus Aquifolium, is, however, a very variable species, and there are several well marked varieties.

It is a native of Japan, and grows about 6 feet high, forming a dense bush, with small, deep green, spiny leaves. The variety ilicifolius has the margins of the leaves more spiny than the type, while latifolius has large leaves; purpureus, greenish purple leaves; variegatus, variegated leaves; and rotundifolius, rounded leaves with no spines.

Cuttings root well in a cold or heated frame.
