Paliurus Spina Christi

Paliurus Australis - This is the Christ's Thorn of south Europe, and was introduced in 1640. It belongs to Rhamnaceae, and forms a dense bush 12 to 25 feet high, with very spiny branches. The deciduous leaves are small and oval, the flowers inconspicuous, followed by curious flat, rounded fruits. This shrub is credited with supplying the thorns to form the crown for mocking Christ previous to the crucifixion.
