Pieris

This genus of Ericaceae is closely related to Andromeda, and thrives in light, peaty soil. There are several species in cultivation, of which Pieris floribunda, from the United States, and Pieris Japonica, from Japan, are the best for general work.

The former is a slow growing, dense bush, 2 to 4 feet high, with small, ovate, evergreen leaves and short, upright panicles of white flowers, which are borne in March.

Pieris Japonica is also an evergreen, but it has larger leaves than the former, and the inflorescences are larger, pendulous, and of a purer white. It blossoms at the same time as Pieris floribunda. This is a very good subject for a bed.
