Rhamnus frangula


A genus of Rhamnaceae composed of a few evergreen and many deciduous shrubs, very few of which are worth growing in ordinary gardens. They thrive in almost any kind of soil, and are easily increased.

Rhamnus Frangula is largely used for the better kinds of charcoal, the best powder being made from it. It is a native of Europe.

Rhamnus Alaternus is an evergreen from south-west Europe. It grows 8 to 10 feet high. The variety angustifolia variegata is a pretty, white variegated shrub.
