Rosa rugosa

Rosa rugosa is a Japanese species of sturdy habit bearing large red blossoms, which are followed by fine Apple-like fruits. By crossing this with garden varieties an interesting and useful race has arisen.

The majority of Rosa are easily cultivated. They prefer a somewhat heavy, loamy soil, but will also thrive in lighter material if it is enriched with manure. An occasional thinning out is necessary, and should be done as soon as the flowers are over. Old, worn out wood has to be removed to give light and air to the growing shoots.
